KOWAN ZU-100 ASSISTS IN NEW WATERWAY PROJECT IN HAMBURG, GERMANY
19-11-2010

Watson & Hillhouse’s ZU-100 Still Worker is currently being used, to install AZ20-700 & AZ37-700 piles ranging from 6 to 17 metres long, in the city of Hamburg, Germany to create a new waterway from the city to Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, which is located south of the city. The piles are being installed through mostly sand with some clay.

In 2013 the International Horticulture Show will take place in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, where the waterway will be used to allow guests to travel downtown by boat and take in the sights.

The Still Worker ZU100 was used because of noise and vibration concerns as the piling was being installed in a residential area and close to a high pressure gas main.

Due to the ZU-100s ability of being able to install piles close to services and 500mm from existing structures, without creating noise or vibration, the contractors could be safe in the knowledge that the Still Worker was the right piece of plant for the job.  The Still Worker is also able to install ‘Z’ piles from 559mm to 708mm wide and ‘U’ piles from 600mm to 750mm wide.

Our customer is very pleased with the progress of the Still Worker as the piling is on schedule and due to finish on time.

W&H AND APPLETON PILING COMPLETE RIVER THAMES PROJECT
19-11-2010

Watson and Hillhouse recently hired Appleton Piling a Kowan Still Worker ZU100 for their contract at Greenwich on the River Thames. Here the equipment was used to extract 118no. AZ25 x 12 metre long piles which had been installed to allow a new river wall to be built. The piles had been installed by a vibrator and impact hammer.

The Still Worker was used because the 150 tonne mobile crane, working at 40 metre radius, was unable to provide sufficient extraction pull for conventional extraction methods.

Before extraction could commence the Still Worker ZU100 had to self travel forward, using a walk back device, along the full length of the pile wall. A walk back device is an attachment that is fitted into the Still Worker chuck. It allows the Still Worker to walk back along piles, after pile installation, to within reach of the crane. It also allows the Still Worker to walk forward along already installed piles to the pile extraction commencement point when the crane is unable to lift the Still Worker.

Because of the Still Worker size and attributes, it was perfect for the job. Happily everything went to plan and the extracting job was completed on time.

KOWAN ZU-100 SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES PROJECT UNDER BRIDGE IN ARNHEM, HOLLAND
19-11-2010

Watson & Hillhouse’s ZU-100 Still Worker has just completed a job in Arnhem, in Eastern Holland.  Piles have been inserted alongside the existing riverbank / quay side side of the lower Rhine, underneath a bridge as part of a project to provide increased stability and a higher flood protection level.  The Rhine splits into various estuaries as it nears the sea and these are susceptible to significant flood risks as a result of sever rain or more frequently, a combination of that and melting snow from Switzerland and Southern Germany.

The ground conditions in the area were mainly mud overlying sand and in some places, unstable.  This factor, along with the fact the piles needed to be placed underneath a bridge meant that the ZU 100’s vibration free movement was perfect for the job.  This also meant that no reaction stand was used at any stage.

The AZ35-700 piles were longer than the original piles at 13 metres in length and have had to be installed in 2 parts due to the height restrictions under the bridge.  This meant welding 2 parts together in situ to obtain the correct length of pile.

Everything ran smoothly and the piling was finished a week ahead of schedule.

UK FIRST FOR ZU100 KOWAN STILL WORKER
16-02-2010

First 700mm Pile Installed in the UK with ZU-100 Kowan Still Worker

Contractor J.T. Mackley working for the Environment Agency used a Kowan ZU-100 supplied by Watson & Hillhouse to drive a 48 metre run of AZ28-700, 13 metre long piles.

This is the first time that AZ 700 mm piles have been installed with a pile press in the UK.

The piles were installed 8 metres into:  3 metres of soft clay, 2 metres of medium dense gravel and 3 metres of dense gravel.

The piling was in front of an existing pile wall which was failing with a pile upstand of approximately 5 metres.

Once the piling was completed a walk back device was used to walk the Still Worker back to within reach of the crane.

The Still Worker is able to install 580mm to 708 mm ‘Z’ piles and 600mm to 750mm ‘U’ piles.

The Ram at the back of the ZU-100 assists the unit in self-travelling.
