W&H ENGINEER VISITS KOWAN, JAPAN
17-11-2011
Due to the growth in sales and hires of our Still Worker fleet, W&H have recently sent one of our engineers over to Japan to have some further training on the Still Worker machines. Joe Manning flew out to Kochi in October to visit Kowan and work alongside their engineers for the week.
The training itself was set around the new manuals for the ZU100 Still Worker and TE200C Power pack. After covering general machine parts and electrical schematics, the engineers took Joe through the new Caterpillar engine powered power packs and the new circuit boards and the future of these regarding LED display unit and data logging.
They also covered hydraulics, electrical circuits, repairs, operation and detecting faults in all Still Worker Machines. Joe found this incredibly helpful: '"The training for general parts and fault finding was set around the ZU100 but we covered the WP150 and the new PZ1200. This was very good as I could then detect the difference between the machine components and how each works"
Joe is now the 4th of our engineers to have further in depth training on Still Workers with Kowan however all of our engineers are able to work on these machines.

SAVING HMS ALLIANCE
16-11-2011
Since HMS Alliance, one of 14 submarines built for service in the Far East during World War 2, was first displayed at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in 1982 parts fo her infrastructure have deteriorated dramatically
. Lying supported over the sea on concrete cradles next to the museum quayside, exposure to sea water is causing ongoing cirrosion to her bow, stern and keel.
An urgent restoration programme has been started to replace the corroded components. As part of the restoration, it is necessary to reclaim land underneath the submarine so that it is on dry land, using a cofferdam and backfill. This will allow access to conserve the outer metal casing and give visitors a whole new view of this important historical vessel.
Before the cofferdam could be installed approximatley 350mm square timber piles had to be extracted using a PVE 2319 High Frequency Variable Moment Vibrator fitted with a timber clamp.
Once the timber piles has been extracted, the PVE 2319VM Vibrator also installed the majority of the cofferdam piles with a ZU 100 noise and vibration free Still Worker installing AZ50 x 15.75 & 20.00 metre long piles within 5 metres of the concrete cradles as there were concerns that any vibrations so close could cause the cradles to move. The soil conditions were a mixture of dense sands and soft clays therefore water jetting was not required.
All Equipment was supplied by Watson & Hillhouse and all piles were extracted and installed successfully .

EMV SUCCESS IN WEST YORKSHIRE
26-09-2011
One of Watson & Hillhouse’s Muller Excavator Mounted Vibrators, the MS-1HFB, has recently completed a project on time in the back garden of a house in Knottingley, West Yorkshire.
The MS-1HFB EMV installed 3 metre trench sheets for a house extension which meant the site area was very confined. The trench sheets were needed to support the neighbouring structure but the largest excavator they could get in due to access from the driveway was 8 ton. The compact MS-1HFB model was therefore the perfect choice to suit the surrounding working environment
It was fitted up using Watson and Hillhouse’s innovative in house designed two pin quick hitch bracket and universal joint.
More information on this design can be read here
EMV MULTI PIN QUICK HITCH BRACKET IS INTRODUCED TO FULL ACCLAIM
16-08-2011
Watson and Hillhouse have developed an EMV Multi Pin Quick Hitch Bracket which has been fully welcomed by the construction industry.

For many years it was common practice to fit EMV’s to a single pin on the quick hitch but this raised a number of safety issues, the Watson and Hillhouse multi pin bracket designed solely by Watson and Hillhouse engineers connects to both quick hitch pins and overcomes all the safety issues associated with the previous method of operating on one quick hitch pin, it also means the operator maintains the flexibility to switch between different site operations with minimal disruption.

The multi pin bracket has been approved by the majority of the EMV manufacturers, each bracket undergoes extensive testing before being put into service. Watson and Hillhouse first introduced the bracket into their own hire fleet but have subsequently received orders from other EMV hirers aiming to replace all their old single pin brackets with the much safer W&H unit.

One of
Watson & Hillhouse’s Kowan ZU-100 Still Worker's has just successfully completed a job in Dongen, The Netherlands. The job, which was inside of a glass factory, was to create a cofferdam to enable redevelopment and extension of part of the existing building.
The first few of the 10m PZC26 piles were installed with a vibrator and then the Still Worker was bought in for the remaining piles. This piece of plant was selected mainly because of the vibration concerns with the job being inside a building but also because of height restrictions and concerns with noise pollution.
The project was completed ahead of schedule with no complications or delays.

Watson & Hillhouse has hired a Kowan Still Worker WP150 to install piles for a culvert to be laid as part of a scheme to build apartments outside the Emirates Football Stadium, home to Arsenal Football Club. The Still Worker has installed approximately 180no. L604 x 6.00 metre long piles into stiff clay ground, to form a rectangular cofferdam.
The site, which is located right next to the Emirates Stadium, is also close to a housing estate, which meant that environmental issues had to be taken into account. The WP-150 was selected once more for its noise and vibration free abilities, ensuring that the work could be carried out with minimal disturbance to the surrounding areas.

Water jetting was not required in this instance, instead water from a domestic tap was used to lubricate and assist pile installation

KOWAN STILL WORKER AND WATER JETTING SYSTEM SUPPORTS SUBSIDING ROAD IN WORTHING, SUSSEX
23-03-2011
Watson & Hillhouse recently hired a Kowan ZU-100 Still Worker and water jetter to install L605 piles x 11 metres long into stiff clay conditions to support a subsiding road in Worthing, Sussex.
As the job was close to a large industrial estate, and there were concerns that conventional piling would create further subsidence, the ZU-100 was selected for its noise and vibration free abilities.

Another major issue was overhead electric cables which were positioned above the pile line. Traditionally a metal lance system is used with the water jetter, to supply high pressure water to the toe of the pile. However, because of the exclusion zone under the cables the metal lance system could not be used.
To overcome this problem a Water Jet Reel System was used. The system does not require the use of metal lances and instead uses high pressure hoses, contained within the Jet Reel drum, to supply high pressure water to the toe of the pile. The Jet Reel drum is fitted to the top of the Still Worker.
The piling was completed ahead of schedule with no set backs or delays.

KOWAN ZU-100 ASSISTS IN NEW WATERWAY PROJECT IN HAMBURG, GERMANY
03-11-2010
Watson & Hillhouse’s ZU-100 Still Worker is currently being used, to install AZ20-700 & AZ37-700 piles ranging from 6 to 17 metres long, in the city of Hamburg, Germany to create a new waterway from the city to Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, which is located south of the city. The piles are being installed through mostly sand with some clay.
In 2013 the International Horticulture Show will take place in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, where the waterway will be used to allow guests to travel downtown by boat and take in the sights.
The Still Worker ZU100 was used because of noise and vibration concerns as the piling was being installed in a residential area and close to a high pressure gas main.
Due to the ZU-100s ability of being able to install piles close to services and 500mm from existing structures, without creating noise or vibration, the contractors could be safe in the knowledge that the Still Worker was the right piece of plant for the job. The Still Worker is also able to install ‘Z’ piles from 559mm to 708mm wide and ‘U’ piles from 600mm to 750mm wide.
Our customer is very pleased with the progress of the Still Worker as the piling is on schedule and due to finish on time.
W&H AND APPLETON PILING COMPLETE RIVER THAMES PROJECT
27-10-2010
Watson and Hillhouse recently hired Appleton Piling a Kowan Still Worker ZU100 for their contract at Greenwich on the River Thames. Here the equipment was used to extract 118no. AZ25 x 12 metre long piles which had been installed to allow a new river wall to be built. The piles had been installed by a vibrator and impact hammer.
The Still Worker was used because the 150 tonne mobile crane, working at 40 metre radius, was unable to provide sufficient extraction pull for conventional extraction methods.
Before extraction could commence the Still Worker ZU100 had to self travel forward, using a walk back device, along the full length of the pile wall. A walk back device is an attachment that is fitted into the Still Worker chuck. It allows the Still Worker to walk back along piles, after pile installation, to within reach of the crane. It also allows the Still Worker to walk forward along already installed piles to the pile extraction commencement point when the crane is unable to lift the Still Worker.
Because of the Still Worker size and attributes, it was perfect for the job. Happily everything went to plan and the extracting job was completed on time.
KOWAN ZU-100 SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES PROJECT UNDER BRIDGE IN ARNHEM, HOLLAND
26-10-2010
Watson & Hillhouse’s ZU-100 Still Worker has just completed a job in Arnhem, in Eastern Holland. Piles have been inserted alongside the existing riverbank / quay side side of the lower Rhine, underneath a bridge as part of a project to provide increased stability and a higher flood protection level. The Rhine splits into various estuaries as it nears the sea and these are susceptible to significant flood risks as a result of sever rain or more frequently, a combination of that and melting snow from Switzerland and Southern Germany.
The ground conditions in the area were mainly mud overlying sand and in some places, unstable. This factor, along with the fact the piles needed to be placed underneath a bridge meant that the ZU 100’s vibration free movement was perfect for the job. This also meant that no reaction stand was used at any stage.
The AZ35-700 piles were longer than the original piles at 13 metres in length and have had to be installed in 2 parts due to the height restrictions under the bridge. This meant welding 2 parts together in situ to obtain the correct length of pile.
Everything ran smoothly and the piling was finished a week ahead of schedule.
